AUPET Scientists Undergo Research Internship in Germany within the “500 Scientists” Program

Professor Katipa Chezhembaeva from the Department of Telecommunication Engineering, and PhD students in Power Engineering Markhabat Sakitzhanov and Makpal Zharkymbekova from the Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications named after Gumarbek Daukeyev (AUPET) are currently undertaking an international research internship under the “500 Scientists” program at Humboldt University of Berlin (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) — one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Germany, founded in 1810.

The internship is taking place from July 1, 2025, to May 29, 2026 (11 months) at Humboldt Innovation GmbH. The program’s theme is “Sustainable Development in Engineering and Telecommunications, Renewable Energy, and Smart Grid Creation”, with a focus on decarbonization, decentralization, dematerialization, and ESG investing in the energy and industrial sectors.

The Program Aims to Develop Research and Professional Competencies in Sustainable Development.The program is designed to develop research and professional competencies in addressing sustainable development challenges across the energy, raw materials, industrial, and agricultural sectors. Special attention is given to studying advanced renewable energy technologies, creating smart power grids (Smart Grid) using IoT technologies for data transmission, and implementing ESG approaches in corporate governance.

Main areas of training and research include:

-studying innovative technologies in the field of renewable energy;

-modeling small- and medium-scale renewable energy generation;

-practical application of ESG investment principles and analysis of “greenwashing” risks;

-conducting research under the supervision of leading German scientists;

-preparing and submitting a research paper to international scientific journals indexed in Scopus.

The internship program includes lectures, practical sessions, academic visits to leading energy companies in Germany, and participation in trainings, workshops, and discussion clubs.

One of the key research activities was a visit to the village of Feldheim — the first and only energy-autonomous settlement in Germany. Feldheim’s sustainable energy policy has demonstrated a successful example of renewable energy integration and has become a driver for human capital development and the enhancement of the region’s social infrastructure. The transition to energy independence has created new jobs in the fields of digital monitoring, grid management, and infrastructure maintenance, contributing to workforce upskilling.

As part of the program, academic visits to BMW and Siemens facilities are also planned, where participants will explore the role of private business in developing human capital, advancing green technologies, and ensuring sustainable economic growth.

Upon successful completion of the internship, participants will receive a certificate from Humboldt University of Berlin. The “Internships for 500 Scientists” program is implemented within the framework of a national initiative to develop human capital and strengthen Kazakhstan’s scientific cooperation with leading European universities. Participation of Kazakhstani researchers in such international projects contributes to innovation development, the exchange of best practices, and the formation of new approaches to modernizing the country’s energy sector.
