An extended meeting of the Republican Educational and Methodological Association in the field of engineering education on the topic of training specialists for the energy sector was held at the Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications named after Gumarbek Daukeev (Energo University).
The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, large energy companies such as Kazatomprom, Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants, and other industry enterprises, as well as representatives of leading universities in Kazakhstan.
Experts highlighted the acute shortage of personnel in the industry and the existing crisis of youth interest in energy, particularly in one of its areas – thermal power engineering. At the same time, the role of the industry is growing yearly, as it is critical to industrial development, economic growth, and the well-being of Kazakhstan's citizens.
Serik Tyutebayev, an industry veteran who worked for many years on the board of Samruk-Energy JSC and is a member of Energo University's Board of Trustees, emphasized the need for active participation from all stakeholders – from educational institutions and specialized ministries to energy companies and opinion leaders – in enhancing the profession's prestige.
Gulzat Kobenova, Chairperson of the Committee for Higher and Postgraduate Education of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, shared the ministry's efforts in this direction, including allocating "Thermal power engineering" as a separate group of educational programs to attract applicants.
The meeting concluded with an agreement among all stakeholders to work jointly on improving the prestige of the energy profession.
