The coronavirus pandemic has made adjustments to the lives and plans of most people around the world. Our university had to do it too. At first, the educational process was transferred to distance learning. Then employees and teachers switched to a remote work format. The summer exam session and even the defense of diplomas took place online too.

Many graduates and teachers of the university hoped that at least the final chord - the presentation of diplomas - would take place at the university. Unfortunately, the quarantine regime in force in the country did not allow this dream to come true.

But it was impossible to leave 730 graduates of this year who received a bachelor's degree without a holiday! The university administration made an unprecedented decision - to hold the graduation ceremony for the graduates of 2020 not just online, but to do it in an unconventional and very solemn way!

In a short period of time, a huge amount of work has been done. Lists of alumni, their photographs were collected. All GPA diplomas were verified. The script and format of the ceremony were developed. Interviews and musical gifts were recorded. By the way, for one of them, the performer, a graduate of last year, Myrzatov Nauryz, flew in from the capital of our Motherland for 2 days to make a professional recording. Segizbayev Aziz, a graduate of 2017, specially returned from Chemolgan, where he was for family reasons. Several days of continuous editing, "withdrawal" of the material, adjustments of details, and here it is, that very exciting day - handing over of bachelor's diplomas in 2020! We can say that the graduation ceremony in 2020 will remain in the memory of all spectators forever!

For the first time in its history, in all 45 years of the existence of the Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications named after Gumarbek Daukeev, the graduation ceremony was held live, in an online format on the university's YouTube channel. The exciting event began on July 15 at 19:00 with the beating of the chronometer, where, according to the director's idea, the countdown began from the number corresponding to the number of graduates of this year.

The graduation ceremony was opened with a greeting from the Rector of the university Sagintayeva Saule Savetovna. She congratulated the heroes of the occasion, the graduates of such a special 2020. The rector recalled that over the years of its existence, our university has graduated more than 40 thousand specialists. Now this squad is replenished with 730 young, creative, forward-looking young people, whom the older generation passes on the baton of responsibility for the future.

The world has changed, but this year will be remembered as a period when distancing brought us closer to each other, when our opportunities expanded. The basis for the success of AUPET graduates lies in high-quality education and unique knowledge, which have been the hallmark of the university for 45 years!

Kind words of parting, congratulations and wishes could not leave anyone indifferent. Vice-rector for academic activities Sergey Vladimirovich Konshin, vice-rector for scientific and innovative activities Saukhimov Almaz Abzhalievich, vice-rector for educational work Makhmutov Serik Kapanovich addressed all graduates with warm words.

Before the start of the presentation procedure, graduates had the opportunity to once again plunge into the atmosphere of four years of study. The musical performance "Univer" from the graduate of 2017 - Segizbayev Aziz was offered to their attention. It was accompanied by a slideshow about the most important and interesting events of the past years: Dedication to students, various competitions, trips to nature, subbotniks, classes, meetings, round tables, conferences and much, much more.

The presentation of the diplomas took place according to a slightly unusual scheme. As a rule, in our university, the presentation of diplomas was always carried out separately by institutes (and before that, faculties). Sometimes it even took place separately according to specialties, since the assembly hall simply could not accommodate everyone who wanted to take part in such a celebration. This time it was decided that since the ceremony is university-wide, the division into institutes will be conditional.

Among those who received their diplomas that day were special graduates. These are the students who, with their selfless work, success in studies, science, sports and social work, have also earned the AUPET Certificate of Honor. The peculiarity of this award lies in the fact that it is given only once in a lifetime and to a strictly limited number of graduates of the year, no more than 8-10 percent of the total number of graduates.

The names of those students who not only studied well, but also showed themselves in science, sports, social work were named first. Together with the diploma with honors, these students were awarded the University Certificate of Honor. There were 27 such graduates in all four institutes.

The next group consists of students with diplomas of  honors who have devoted themselves to their studies entirely. This group is the largest of the three, with 41 university graduates.

The third group is students with certificates of honor and diplomas of the usual sample. There were 28 such graduates in total.

And, finally, the fourth group of graduates - holders of regular diplomas. In this part of the ceremony, the directors of each institute addressed the graduates with words of greetings and wishes of a good way. These were the director of the Institute of Electrical Engineering Abdimuratov Zhubanysh Saiaevich, director of the Institute of Heat Power Engineering and Heat Engineering Bakhtiyar Balzhan Torepashevna, director of the Institute of Space Engineering and Telecommunications Balbaev Gani Kudaibergenovich, director of the Institute of Control Systems and Information Technology Kartbaev Timur Saatdinovich. Unfortunately, three of them, due to health reasons, were unable to personally address their graduates, but their appeals were announced live. It is curious that the sequence of the directors' greeting and presentation corresponded to the sequence of the appearance of institutions in the structure of the university.

Each graduate, including those who completed the correspondence department, was personally tagged, his photograph was shown, the name and degree received were indicated. And with the help of a special program, it was possible to decorate each photo with a bachelor's Confederate! And all this took place against an amazing space background with original animation. Unfortunately, not all graduates had photographs. But their names were also announced and shown on the air, so that no one was offended.

At this it would be possible to end the ceremony, but the team of organizers prepared a few more surprises. Sharip Tomiris, winner of the silver medal "University of Maktanysha" for his contribution to the development of the student life of AUPET, the founder of the tourist club "AUES WHYMPER" and the best student of 2017-2019 spoke on behalf of all graduates of 2020 with words of gratitude. In her speech, she emphasized that the knowledge and skills obtained in the best technical university in the country are a solid foundation for the future success of every graduate student. The main task of this year's alumni - the first graduates of AUPET, which has been named after Gumarbek Daukeev since the fall of 2019 - is to contribute to the development of the country and proudly carry the title of AUPET graduate through life!

In accordance with tradition, at the end of the celebration, the patriarch of the university, the person who stood at the origins of its formation, the first rector of the Almaty Energy Institute, Bolotov Albert Vasilyevich, addressed the graduates with words of farewell. He recalled that AUPET has been producing highly qualified specialists for 45 years. "Bata", expressed in the words of the great Abai: "May the path of your young soul be righteous!" made a strong impression on everyone and made them think about many things.

The apotheosis and final point of the ceremony was the performance of the graduate of 2019, Myrzatov Nauryz, with the song "Energy forever". This song is the unofficial anthem of all students and alumni of our university. On this touching note, the graduation ceremony for graduates of the Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications named after Gumarbek Daukeev in 2020 was completed.
