Mission Possible: An adult conversation with students about the threats from global extremism

The meeting with the senior researcher of the Institute of Philosophy, Political Science and Religious Studies of the CS MES RK Almasbek Shagyrbay was held at the Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications named after Gumarbek Daukeyev on February 25, 2022. He told the students about the prevention of destructive thinking among young people. “Islam, Christianity, Buddhism and other traditional religions preach kindness and humanism. Atheists are not persecuted in our country, as there is a Constitution and the right to freedom of conscience operates. Today we are faced with the fact that extremists are trying to instill a sense of alienation in society in order to then push fathers and children, brother with brother, close people against each other. They force the young man to renounce his family, to leave the university, not to communicate with friends. After that, the person himself begins to believe that no one needs him - and this is already a path to a bad road. We need to understand the threat posed by extremism. The Koran speaks of love, kindness and respect for other religions and peoples. But extremists are taking the context and distorting Islam. We need to develop a filter within ourselves and learn about religion through official sources of information. You cannot trust social networks and foreign preachers. Now on the Internet there are provocateurs and recruiters of international terrorist organizations who seek to undermine the stability of our beloved, native Kazakhstan,” he said.

During the meeting, Almasbek Shagyrbay spoke about everyday Islam, the threat of Salafism, the external attributes of a practicing Muslim, and an explanatory conversation was held with university students.
