The Rector Saule Sagintayeva: We need to strengthen ties with the real economy and to analyze the labor market competently

On March 11, 2022, a regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at the Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications named after Gumarbek Daukeyev in an online format. “The support of our graduates is very important, as is the support of the staff for Industry 4.0. Today, the rating of the National Chamber of Entrepreneurs of the Republic of Kazakhstan "Atameken" plays an important role in the country, as it helps to clarify the competitive advantages of educational programs of universities. We will talk not only about this, but also about many other things at the meeting,” Rector Saule Sagintayeva said.

After the words of welcome from the rector, the directors of the institutes spoke. They spoke about the projects of new educational programs in their reports, which are able to expand the competencies of AUPET in the field of artificial intelligence, nuclear energy and medicine. “If we now introduce a new program and train specialists for nuclear energy, where will students go to work after graduation? The construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan is still in the plans. We need to carefully study this issue,” said Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Almaz Sauhimov.

Member of the Board of Trustees and Director of LLP "RIZA GLOBAL"  Madi Agybaev shared new ideas. “We sometimes have to retrain young people who have graduated from high school. It is possible that the problem is not in the educational programs themselves, but in the laboratories and practical exercises, which have lost their relevance a bit,” he said.

Director of the Department for Academic Activities Rufina Mukhamedzhanova made a report. “We see a general decrease in the number of vacancies. In addition, we still have old problems when employers have excessive requirements for candidates. There is a decline in employers' interest in young professionals, which generally indicates an oversaturation of the labor market. There are solutions to these problems. We must look for new ways to collaborate with employers to get them involved in the learning process and research work of students. The additional educational programs MINOR (with the issuance of a Certificate) provide excellent opportunities for students to find employment after graduation,” she said.

At the end of the event, the Rector Saule Sagintayeva thanked all the participants of the meeting for the reports and voiced opinions and proposals. “The labor market in Kazakhstan is changing rapidly, and we must keep up with these processes. New educational programs should help our students not only unleash their full intellectual and creative potential, but also become a solid foundation for career and professional growth in the future. Therefore, we need to strengthen ties with the real economy and competently analyze the labor market,” she said.
