The official delegation of the British Embassy has arrived at AUPET named after Gumarbek Daukeyev on a business visit

On April 28, 2022, an official delegation of the British Embassy in Kazakhstan visited the Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications named after Gumarbek Daukeyev. First Secretary, Trade and Investment Director Beth McKendrick; Head of the UK Trade and Investment Office in Atyrau Anuar Kozhabekov; Trade Advisor Larisa Glukhova; Regional Head for Eastern Europe and Central Asia for Financial, Professional and Business Services Rasul Alibekuly were part of delegations. The distinguished guests were welcomed by the Vice-Rector for Academic Activities S. Konshin, Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation A. Saukhimov, Director of the Department "International Cooperation and Academic Mobility" M. Aliyarova, Director of the Institute of Electricity and Electrical Engineering Zh. Abdimuratov, Director of the Institute of Information Technology A. Doszhanova, Director Institute of Thermal Power Engineering and Control Systems A. Begimbetova and Head of the Department “Power Supply and Renewable Energy Sources” K. Tergemes.

Vice-rector Sergei Konshin revealed some plans of the university for the development of nuclear energy in his speech. “Dear First Secretary Beth McKendrick,” he said, “AUPET plans to introduce a new educational program “Nuclear Reactors and Installations”. This is a long process that involves cooperation not only with Kazatomprom, but also with international companies and the International Atomic Energy Agency. I am sure that our desire to become one of the universities with nuclear competencies will also be of interest to our British partners.”

The First Secretary of the British Embassy was deeply impressed by the speech of Provost Sergei Konshin. “Dear Sergey Vladimirovich,” she said, “I thank you for such details! This indicates a high level of trust in us. I want to ask you two main questions. First question: how are you doing with the commercialization of projects? The second question is: how are you doing with green energy?

Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Almaz Sauhimov answered questions of the UK representative: “Our university is striving for self-sufficiency. We do not receive any financial support from the state or anyone, which determines a number of conditions that we do scientific research with a high degree of commercialization. We have 20 scientific projects with a total amount of 700 million tenge (1.5 million US dollars). Services and research in various fields account for 70% of them. We also work on patents that bring us income. In green energy, we are conducting a number of studies on the integration of renewable energy. We have our own developments of small wind farms up to 15 megawatts.”

After the main part of the meeting, the first secretary of the British Embassy, Beth McKendrick, was presented with the book “Decarbonization of the extractive industries of the economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan”. The meeting ended with a tour of the laboratories of AUPET named after Gumarbek Daukeyev.
