Effective language learning through academic mobility

International cooperation with foreign higher educational institutions is one
of the priorities of the Almaty University of Power Engineering and
Telecommunications named after Gumarbek Daukeyev. Undoubtedly, academic
mobility is one of the main tools for quality training of highly-qualified engineers
at the university.
The main goal of academic mobility is to provide the student with the
opportunity to gain knowledge in their chosen specialty, to be trained in well-
known educational centers with leading scientific schools.
Antje Fechner, lecturer at the Language Center at Anhalt University in
Germany, came to our university as part of an international academic mobility on
October 17, 2022. The goal was to teach students the German language in the
unified educational program "Systems Engineering".
For one week, A. Fekhner, together with the senior lecturer of the
Department for Language Studies Muratbekova Sarah Abishevna, taught the
students of the university the German language. Thanks to this, students had the
opportunity to communicate directly, both orally and in writing, with a native
German speaker. A. Fechner and S.A. Muratbekova exchanged rich work
experience.
The positive results of such work were obvious: the students had a positive
attitude and increased interest in learning the German language, and their eyes
shone with faith in the possibility of studying abroad. Both lecturers, guided by the
communicative approach in the methodology of language teaching and
understanding the process of language training as the use of speaking skills in live
communication, quickly found a common language and achieved noticeable
success in practical classes.
In accordance with the national tradition of hospitality of the Kazakh people,
the lecturers of the Departments for Language Studies and "Electronics and
Robotics" arranged a city tour for the guest from Germany in their free time. They
showed the sights of Almaty, and also treated them to dishes of national cuisine for
a generous Kazakh dastarkhan. The guest was sincerely grateful for such attention.
Antje Fechner expressed her opinion and wrote specific proposals regarding
the issues of fast and effective language learning.
Antje described her impressions during the working visit as follows:
- I was interested in all the meetings that took place in Kazakhstan. I realized
how little I had known about this country. I was greatly struck by the youth who
passionately love their homeland. Among the numerous questions asked to me by
students were: “How can I study in Germany?”, “How can I quickly learn
German?”. After classes, colleagues showed me the sights of the city, as well as
picturesque places in the countryside. At such moments, I saw with my own eyes
the Kazakh hospitality, which is legendary. Thank you for your hospitality! We are
waiting for you in our country!
