About the English language, the enthusiasm of students and not only...

On April 26, 2023, The Republican student contest "English Skills Contest"
was held at the Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications
named after G. Daukeev. Contest aimed not only to choose a team that
demonstrated a high level of English language skills, but also to reveal the creative
potential of technical university students, to motivate them to live communication
in English in all spheres of life. Particular emphasis was placed on the professional
use of the language. The contest was held by the Department for Language Studies
of the University. As part of the competition, student teams completed a number of
various creative tasks: a greeting of the teams and an intellectual quiz contest
"Scrabble", in which students answered questions on country studies, scientific and
technical achievements, inventors; in addition, the participants of the game had to
recognize words of wisdom,idioms from famous films, which also allowed them to
show a broad outlook, immersion in the culture of the language being studied. The
audience felt the atmosphere of competition, excitement; we can safely say that the
motto of all the contestants was the English phrase: Do your best! One of the most
interesting stages of the competition was the demonstration of a video about their
university and the role of the English language in their future profession; students
from different universities learned a lot about each other, about how they see their
profession and their future. Finally, the creative sketch contest “It's great to be a
student" filled the hall with the enthusiasm of student life; topical problems, what
pleases and what upsets our students, love for the future profession - we saw all
this on stage. All stages of the competition were lively and interesting; a variety of
tasks gave the opportunity to plunge into the atmosphere of English culture, the
English language. The creative atmosphere was also supported by talented students
who demonstrated both excellent knowledge of English and outstanding vocal
skills. The winners of the competition – teams of universities such as the Academy
of Civil Aviation (1st place), the Academy of Logistics and Transport (2nd place),
AUPET (2nd place), the International University of Information Technology and
the Kazakh-British Technical University (3rd place) were awarded valuable prizes
and certificates. There are no losers in such competitions, there are only winners –
our students who enthusiastically perceive everything new, who strive to improve.
Summing up, we note that the most important achievement of the competition was
the opening of new horizons of cooperation, new forms of interaction, and the
English language became an intermediary in professional communication and in
the contest of students of technical universities.
